Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment in Energy Production Sector

The energy industry largely relies on thermal equipment such as steam and hot water boilers, gas turbines, and steam generators. Harmonized standards have been developed for this type of equipment, defining specific hazards that require protective measures. Due to rapid technological development, new equipment designs may introduce hazards not covered by current standards. In such cases, the standards recommend conducting a detailed hazard analysis to properly assess the risk and implement appropriate preventive measures.

Scope of the Service Includes:

Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) of boiler and auxiliary boiler systems in accordance with PN-EN 61882-1:2016. We identify potential hazards, define hazardous scenarios, and assign preliminary risk levels using the risk matrix provided by the client. This analysis also highlights design weaknesses, saving time on future system modifications.
Selection of protective measures based on applicable standards – Protective functions of the energy installation are derived from the HAZOP hazard analysis and the PN-EN 12952/3 standard series. The service includes supplementing the existing safety functions list with additional protections required by the relevant standards.
SIL Level Assignment – Each safety function is assigned a Safety Integrity Level (SIL), in accordance with the requirements of the PN-EN 12952/3 standards series. This allows achieving an acceptable risk level resulting from specific emergency scenarios.
Preparation of machine safety instructions – Some of the risks identified during the analysis must be mitigated through organizational measures. These measures, defined during the risk analysis, are continuously incorporated into the machine’s operation and maintenance manual.

The dedicated method for performing this analysis is the risk graph described in PN-EN 50156-1:2015. Upon client request, we can also perform the analysis using other methods such as Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) or risk matrix in accordance with PN-EN 61511-3:2017.
