Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment in the Process Industry

The main sectors of the process industry include the chemical, petrochemical, gas, and manufacturing industries. Installations used in industrial processes are highly unique, which makes it rare to encounter two identical systems. As a result, there are no specific standards prescribing concrete protective measures. Existing standards refer instead to the need for hazard analysis and risk assessment in order to properly evaluate risks and implement appropriate preventive measures.

Scope of the Service Includes:

Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) of process installations in accordance with PN-EN 61882-1:2016. We identify potential hazards and hazardous scenarios and assign initial risk levels based on the risk matrix provided by the client. The analysis also highlights weaknesses in the design, saving time on future system modifications.
Selection of protective measures based on applicable standards – For installations covered by harmonized standards, we optionally supplement the existing list of safety functions with protective measures required by those standards.
SIL Level Assignment – Each safety function is assigned the required Safety Integrity Level (SIL) in accordance with PN-EN 61511-3:2017, allowing an acceptable risk level to be achieved for specific failure scenarios. The most commonly used SIL assignment methods in process installations include: Risk Graph, Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Risk Matrix. The choice of method depends on client requirements. Preparation of installation safety instructions – Some of the hazards identified during the risk analysis must be mitigated through organizational measures. These measures, defined during the risk analysis, are continuously incorporated into the machine’s operation and maintenance manual.
